School Meals

A two-course meal is provided daily.  Menus are designed to meet the nutritional requirements of young children. Leaflets giving details of daily and weekly menus are given to children at the start of September and again in April.

School meals are supervised at all times and social training is an important aspect of the lunch period.  Dinner money is collected on Monday mornings and it should be in an envelope/purse marked with the child’s name, class and amount enclosed.

The current cost of school meals is £10.00 a week (£2.00 a day).  If payment is forgotten on Monday morning, a note will be sent home asking for payment to be made the following day.  If payment is not received by the end of the week, we will ask you to provide a packed lunch for your child.  We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in this matter.

Families receiving Income Support are entitled to receive Free School Meals.  Application forms for Free School Meals are available from Gateshead Council and from Birtley Library.

Sweets and snacks are not allowed at playtimes but all pupils receive a piece of fruit daily through the ‘Free Fruit for Schools’ programme.

As you are aware, from September 2014 ALL key stage one pupils will be entitled to a free school lunch.

It is very important that if you are claiming free school meals already you continue to do so, or if you think you are entitled to free school meals through means tested benefits  you  put a claim in to the Benefits section of Gateshead Council,  as this has a big impact on the funding school will receive.
